Theroist - Music video review
Above is a power point created by one of my peers in my media class, Laurel Reed. Which focuses on Laura Mulveys Male Gaze Theory.
This can be seen in current music videos such as Rihanna's 'work' music video's.
The Camera angles tilts up the body of the artist as she is singing, allowing the audience to see the curve of her body, through the deliberate camera movment.
The Mise en scene is also attributed to the male gaze in this scene, as it is low pink lighting which, which could be used to sexualise the female artist in the video. Also the framing of the scenes show that Rihanna is in the front the focus, however Drake is often close to center or always in view, signifying his importance.
In some scenes in our music video, we also complied to Laura Mulvey's 'Male Gaze Theroy' as the mise en scene of some scenes had the main protagonist dressed in simply a t-shirt, there are also some scenes in which the camera tilts up her body to show her curves. We chose to do this as it is a common convention in music videos and we decided to comply with this convention.

Roland Barthes
Above is a powerpoint on Roland Barthes codes theory:
1. Hermeneutic Code
2. Proairetic Code
3. Semantic Code
4. Symbolic code
5. Cultural Code
The Narrative part of our video follows the Hermeneutic code as we avoid telling the truth throughout. We make the reason our main character is Panicking unknown, as the figure in black is not given an identity. The Music video also follows the Proairetic code as the end scene is left on a cliffhanger as we do not know what will happen to the protagonist. The Semantic code in the music video could be seen through the editing of the bridge in the song. During those scenes the main protagonist is shown panicking on the roof top, which is faded on top of another scene in which she is free in the night, this could symbolise her desire to be free from her boyfriend.

Art Pop/ Indie pop Digipak convention
A very popular convention of Indie Pop Album cover are the use of colours and or possibly lack of colour. Also another convention is that unlike other genres, digipaks from this genre only have 2 sides not 4, this has contributed to my decision to make my digipak 2 sided. Furthermore the use image on the front of Album covers are generally the main artist, which is why I have decided to have my Artist, named 'Daliah', to be on the front cover.

Final Video
We have now completed are final music video, which we have put onto youtube.
Album name
I have decided to name the album 11:11 based on the cultural theories of the numbers 11:11. The most common Theory is that when you see the numbers 11:11 you should make a wish, it is supposed to come true. Another theory is that when you see the numbers you should stop, and recognise the significance of the moment. I chose this title as I believe the target audience of adolescents and young adults would have a connection to this and therefore feel a connection to the artist.
Experiment with Album Covers
I have done some more experiment with the album cover deciding that I should make the font of the cover white and bold, complying to conventions of digipaks in the genre indie/indie pop - rock.
I have also kept the colouring of the digipak dark and moody to reflect the mood of the album.
Parental consent
The Parental Advisory label is a warning label introduced by the Recording Industry Association Of America in 1985. It is placed on audio recordings in recognition of excessive profanities or inappropriate references, with the intention of alerting parents or careers of potentially unsuitable martial for children.
In my music video we have decided to put a parental advisory on the product as their is the use of a swear word in the lyrics, as well as the depiction of adult content such as a characters drinking and smoking.
But my head's filling up with the wicked games, up in flames
How can I fuck with the fun again, when I'm known
And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them
Everything's cool when we're all in line, for the throne
But I know it's not forever (Yeah)

Digipak size and demnsions
A lot of the artist of my genre, Indie/Indie-pop, use 2 sided digipaks, which has given me inspiration to use a two sided digipack instead of a 4 sided like some other genres.
For Example:
Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See (2011)
Lorde - Pure Heroine (2013)
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die (2012)

Tennis Courts Lyrics - Performance and Narrative
Our group decided to make the music video half performance half narrative. The Highlighted lyrics are the performance parts of our music video and the non highlighted parts are the narrative or no lip-syncing parts.
Don't you think that it's boring how people talk
Making smart with their words again, well I'm bored
Because I'm doing this for the thrill of it, killin' it
Never not chasing a million things I want
And I am only as young as the minute is full of it
Getting pumped up from the little bright things I bought
But I know they'll never own me (Yeah)
Baby be the class clown
I'll be the beauty queen in tears
It's a new art form showing people how little we care (yeah)
We're so happy, even when we're smilin' out of fear
Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (yeah)
Pretty soon I'll be getting on my first plane
I'll see the veins of my city like they do in space
But my head's filling up with the wicked games, up in flames
How can I fuck with the fun again, when I'm known
And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them
Everything's cool when we're all in line, for the throne
But I know it's not forever (Yeah)
Baby be the class clown
I'll be the beauty queen in tears
It's a new art form showing people how little we care (yeah)
We're so happy, even when we're smilin' out of fear
Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (yeah)
It looked alright in the pictures (yeah)
Getting caught soft with the triple is it
I fall apart, with all my heart
And you can watch from your window
And you can watch from your window
Baby be the class clown
I'll be the beauty queen in tears
It's a new art form showing people how little we care (yeah)
We're so happy, even when we're smilin' out of fear
Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (yeah)
And talk it up like yeah (yeah)
And talk it up like yeah (yeah)
Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (yeah)
And talk it up like yeah (yeah)
And talk it up like yeah (yeah)
Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (Yeah)
Sabrina Claudio - 'Confidently lost'
My group got inspiration from Sabrina Claudio's 'Confidently lost' music video, in which there are long duration shots of the main artist singing her song in strange locations. We took this idea and some of the scenes we have our protagonist singing in a bath. We also gained inspiration from the mise-en-scene of the scenes as the artist sings in a red satin dress, we took this on board and had our actor, Klaudia, sing in a red dress, to symbioses her freedom and sexuality,
Goffman’s Theory (1972)
Goffman’s Theory (1972)
In the portrayal of men and women, advertising often uses the following codes and conventions:
- Superiority, Domination & Body Language: Men are shown in dominant positions and appear to be reflective of thought and intelligence. Women are physically portrayed in sexual or reclining poses with blank or inviting expressions.
- Dismemberment: On females, parts of the body such as legs, chest, etc., are used, rather than the full body. This is often applied to sell products which are not related to the body, such as mobile phones
- The Voice-Over Authority: In moving image advertisements, male voices are used as voice-overs in commercials rather than females.
Font Types
In a lot of Indie/indie pop music Digpaks, the artist choose to use bold regularly white or black font types, which largely influenced my choice in font types.
For example
This has given me inspiration to look into different font types that I can use for example
For example
Artist Name
The artist of the song we decided to use, 'Lorde', real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor. However she decided to change her name to 'Lorde' due to her obsession with monarchy and royalty, she says “I love the sound of the word and how it looks, but I also like how it’s a little arrogant, you know what I mean?”.
This has given me inspiration to pick one word names from my artist on my digipak, for example.....
1. Katrina
2. Dalia
3. Rayna
4. Roza
5.Rosalie
6.Zania
Trapped Vs Free Contrast
In Our Music video we decided to focus on the Binary Oppositions of dark and light as well as trapped and free. We decided to do a performance and narrative project, we showed the contrast through this. The performance part of the music video exposed her as being free in contrast with the narrative part of the video which showed her to be trapped.
In SIA's 'Elastic Heart' the two main protagonist are portrayed as being both free and confined. the mise-en-scene of the cage represents the protagonist being restricted, however their contemporary dance suggests that they are both free.

Digipack Ideas
I've been working on a few ideas for my Digipack and I have thought about working with the concept of dark and Light that is evident in our video.
